Tommaso Ciampa is the new NXT Champion.
The bout was originally scheduled to be a number one contenders match, but best laid plans went out the window when Samoa Joe was forced to relinquish the title due to injury. This resulted in William Regal making the clash a shoot out for the gold.
There was controversy before the match even began with Kyle O’Reilly being taken out backstage by Pete Dunne and Ridge Holland. With O’Reilly unable to compete, William Regal announced that the rookie Von Wagner would be his replacement.
When the match finally got underway, each man enjoyed their own moment in the sun where they looked as if they may grab the win.
Dunne did his best to ground the powerhouse Von Wager, but the big man kept finding his way back to his feet. After flattening Dunne, LA Knight gained a measure of control, attempting to grind down Ciampa. However, Ciampa fought back hitting Widow’s Bell on Knight only for Dunne to pull the fallen man out of the ring.
Ciampa launched himself to the outside with a corkscrew dive before the match returned to the ring, momentum back in Wagner’s favour. The big man hit an Olympic Slam on Dunne for a near fall.
In the end with the match now flying at breakneck speed, Ciampa hit aptly the named Fairy Tale Ending on Knight to grab the win.
NXT’s second greatest love story is complete, Tommaso Ciampa and Goldie are as one once more.
