Thunder Rosa is set to face off against Leyla Hirsch in the first match of the AEW Women’s World Championship Eliminator Tournament!
The two women will battle in the United States bracket and kick off the tournament. Allaying fears that the early rounds of the tournament would be restricted to AEW Dark, the match will air on the upcoming edition of Dynamite. Despite all sixteen competitors being confirmed, Rosa vs. Hirsh becomes just the second announced matchup of the tournament.
With Riho vs. Serena Deeb already announced, this means that the remaining matches of the United States bracket will feature a combination of Tay Conti, Anna Jay, Britt Baker and Nyla Rose.
The winner between Thunder Rosa and Leyla Hirsch will move onto the quarter-finals of the tournament and move one step closer to earning a championship match against Hikaru Shida. The reigning AEW Women’s World champion may not be there to witness the match, however. Shida recently announced that she is in Japan producing matches for the Japanese bracket of the tournament. Though no matches from the bracket have been announced, the competitors are as follows:
- Aja Kong
- Yuka Sakazaki
- Emi Sakura
- Ryo Mizunami
- Mei Suruga
- Rin Kadokura
- Maki Itoh
Despite her recent high-profile loss against Britt Baker, Thunder Rosa remains one of the biggest names in the tournament. A rematch against Baker in the later rounds of the tournament is a possibility and many fans would likely welcome it. Due to her time spent working for Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling, Rosa is familiar with competitors in both brackets.
An intriguing possibility, should the star progress, would be a rematch with Maki Itoh. On January 5th 2020, Rosa defeated Itoh for the International Princess Championship, becoming the first gaijin to win a championship for TJPW in the process.
