On the March 17th episode of AEW Dynamite, dubbed St Patrick’s Day Slam, Thunder Rosa and Dr Britt Baker tore the house down in a punishing main event.
Competing in a Unsanctioned Lights Out match, the first of it’s kind to appear on Dynamite, the two women put on a clinic of destruction, beating each other with tables, ladders, steel chairs and thumbtacks.
Not only was the match notable for its brutality it was the first time that two women had headlined an AEW show since the promotions inception.
After Thunder Rosa Powerbomed Baker onto the thumbtacks leaving her back looking like the proverbial pincushion, Baker somehow mounted a comeback, cinching in the Lockjaw. However, Rosa would break the hold by rolling Baker back into the thumbtacks, before hitting the Fire and Thunder Driver from the ring apron to the floor, through a table, to finally clinch the victory.
The match was greeted by near-universal acclaim online with both women commended for their efforts.
Speaking to Tony Schiavone backstage after the blood-soaked contest, Rosa revelled in how much the match meant to her, detailing how proud she was of her efforts.
This means everything to me. As you guys know, I come from nothing. Seven months ago I came here to make a statement. That was to put women’s wrestling on the map. With blood, sweat and tears, I just showed you that women’s wrestling should be valued everywhere, and I’m very, very proud of this. Thank you for everyone for believing in me and the Thunder Army,”
Rosa also took to Twitter in the aftermath of the brawl, reflecting further on the match she added:
“My goal in life has always been to champion things for those women who don’t belong, who are ostracized and criticized, for those who are push aside and not taken serious. This win was bigger than me. It was for you! Never allowed anyone to tell you don’t belong…”
