A top WWE star is the latest to praise Gunther and hopes that the scrapped match between them will happen at some point in the future.
Following on from his loss to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40 that brought the record-breaking Intercontinental Championship reign to an end, The Ring General has firmly cemented himself in the main event scene by being victorious in the King of the Ring tournament and is now the number one contender for Damian Priest’s World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. With the physical style being a stark contrast to many modern matches and Gunther frequently putting on the match of the night, it’s no surprise that many stars of the past and present want to be matched up against the leader of Imperium.
While appearing on the What’s The Story? Podcast, current Tag Team Champion Finn Balor hailed Gunther as the best performer of the modern era and is still looking for the match that was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic:
“WALTER or Gunther, whatever you wanna call him, in my opinion, is probably the best performer on Earth right now. In my opinion, to watch in the ring. I get so oversaturated seeing so much stuff that I just kinda go “[I] can’t be arsed watching this”. I’ve not seen it all, but I’ve seen so much. I’m 43 soon, so I’ve watching wrestling for 35 years and it’s rare that I go “ah I’m interested in this” but when WALTER gets in the ring, I’m interested. I want to see everything that he does. There no bits where I go I know what he’s gonna do for the next 5 minutes.
It’s really interesting to me and that’s one of the few matches that I haven’t had and I really want to have. We tried to set it up before COVID in NXT UK but it looked like the world had a different plan for us and we went a different way. Now we are both heels and I am not sure how it is gonna work out but I have expressed the opinion to the office that I would love to get that match in the future. Fingers crossed we can get it done in the next 5 years.”
NXT UK TakeOver Dublin was originally scheduled for April 2020 as was building to a dream match between Balor and Gunther. However, due to restrictions in place, the event was rescheduled on multiple occasions and ultimately cancelled.
Gunther has also recently named a surprising match as his favourite WWE bout.
