The Undertaker has faced a number of formidable foes during his decades in WWE, and he’s not shown fear in the face of fire, fighting on top of Hell in a Cell, or being attacked with numerous weapons. Instead, The Deadman is said to have a fear of what most people find to be an unassuming fruit: the cucumber.
During a 2020 interview with Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take, the real life Mark Calaway opened up about this “fear” that’s become the stuff of legend, insisting that he’s not afraid of the fruit; he simply isn’t a fan.
“Okay let’s get this straight…I’m not scared of cucumbers. I just don’t like cucumbers, okay?”
Continuing, The Undertaker explained that while he’d want to get away from the situation if someone brought a cucumber into his presence, he wouldn’t run away in fear. He does admit that a cut up cucumber is a more dastardly foe than one that’s intact.
“I’ll probably leave the room, but I’m not gonna run…If they’re whole, that’s one thing. But if they’re cut up…” (h/t Comicbook.com)
The Undertaker’s Wife Michelle McCool Once Explained The Origin Of Her Husband’s Cucumber Aversion
During a May 2022 appearance on the Wives of Wrestling podcast, Michelle McCool discussed her husband’s strange phobia, and revealed how the couple’s daughter isn’t all that understanding about her father’s wishes.
“We can’t even have one in the room. Every birthday, [daughter] Kaia gets cucumbers. She’ll like put them under his pillow, she’ll put them in his car. Cucumbers, he can’t even smell them … can’t even be around it.”
McCool continued, revealing the reason behind his fear stems from a particularly bad experience.
“He ate so many cucumbers one day that he got sick. And ever since then, it was just game over.” (h/t WrestlingInc)
Elsewhere in the podcast, Michelle McCool recalled being questioned by the police when someone falsely claimed as a prank that she had killed her husband with a sledgehammer.
The Undertaker was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame ahead of WrestleMania 38 in his home state of Texas, and during his speech, he emotionally thanked his wife for supporting him and helping him become the man he is today.
