The Undertaker Recalls His Daughter Being Distraught That He Beat John Cena At WrestleMania 34

By Lyle Kilbane. Published 1st December 2021.
The Undertaker John Cena

The Undertaker and WrestleMania go hand in hand but at WrestleMania 34 he upset one very special fan when he defeated John Cena – his own daughter.

For over two decades no WrestleMania was complete without WWE’s resident Phenom competing, and most likely winning, on the show. Building a legendary streak like no other The Undertaker’s match at WrestleMania became as much of an attraction as any other main event or world championship match on the card.

Famously at WrestleMania 30, that streak was broken by Brock Lesnar but The Deadman was back to winning ways at the next two Show Of Shows as he dispatched Bray Wyatt and Shane McMahon respectively.

At WrestleMania 33, The Undertaker was back in the main event as he took on Roman Reigns. Reigns inflicted Taker’s second WrestleMania loss and afterwards The Undertaker left his ring jacket, hat and gloves in the ring, signalling to many that his time was now over.

And it may well have been had it not been for a tenacious John Cena. Cena found himself at a loose end for WrestleMania 34 as his own full-time WWE career began to wind down. The 16-time champion of the world began calling out The Undertaker for what would be a legendary showdown of two modern-day WWE icons.

The Undertaker did not respond to Cena until during WrestleMania 34 itself as he made his way to the ring to face Cena one-on-one for the first time in 12 years. With the fans inside the Superdome still on their feet, the match was over before it began as The Undertaker put Cena away in less than three minutes.

While many fans in New Orleans that night were elated with the result, there was one little girl backstage who was anything but thrilled. As The Undertaker explained to Kevin Hart on Hart’s Cold As Balls show, his own daughter was rooting for John Cena:

“They come back after I go backstage and she is just distraught. I am like, ‘Babe was what’s wrong?’ [She said] ‘I’m happy you won but I’m really sad John lost.’ It gets better. I gotta go get John. I said, ‘John, you gotta come and talk to my daughter back here. I need you, buddy.’”

“He was really good, though. He goes, ‘Okay. I said a lot of bad things about your dad. I deserved it. I’m okay. But you know, I did say a bunch of bad things.’”

Following his bout with John Cena, The Undertaker had one more WrestleMania bout in him as he defeated AJ Styles in a Boneyard Match in the main event of WrestleMania 36 in 2020.
