The Undertaker is very proud of what Roman Reigns accomplished in WWE in the past 3 years.
In August 2020, Reigns became the World Champion once again as he defeated Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman in a triple threat match at Payback with no fans in attendance. Although Reigns’ becoming champion for the 5th time was inevitable, few would have predicted that it would have lasted for the next 3 and a half years. Eclipsing the reigns of many of his rivals, Reigns made history when all was said and done as the longest reigning champion of the 21st century and the 4th longest reign in company history.
The Tribal Chief’s time as champion came to an end at WrestleMania 40 when Cody Rhodes defeated the Head of the Table to become the new Undisputed Champion after overcoming all the odds in the Bloodline Rules match, which saw cameo appearances from John Cena and The Undertaker.
Looking back at the events that unfolded on his Six Feet Under podcast, The Phenom credited Reigns for what he accomplished as champion and how this will be a reign that will be remembered for decades to come:
“There was a lot of really emotional moments backstage. You can imagine Roman coming back and after just — what an amazing run as champion. I mean, it really — If you look at it and put it in today’s market — what a phenomenal run. It’s not going to go down in the record books as the longest World title run. But when you look at it in actuality with as much coverage, as much media, as much exposure that you have now — I mean, you have to go back to someone like [Bob] Backlund’s run and [Hulk] Hogan’s early run. They didn’t have social media. They didn’t have as much live TV or they didn’t wrestle at all on TV.”
Receiving a great reaction from the fans with the surprise appearance, The Undertaker explained why it was so important to him to be a part of the match.
The Undertaker Reveals When He Got The Call For WrestleMania
While The Deadman was a part of the night 2 main event and helped to neutralise The Rock, the Hall of Famer was not a lock for the match well ahead of time. Further elaborating on his role over the course of the weekend, The Undertaker revealed how close to the match he was told that they needed him to get physical.
