Christian Cage got a taste of his own medicine while at a concert.
Back at the AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view in October 2023, Cage successfully defended the TNT Championship against Darby Allin in the main event of the pay-per-view. Shortly after the defence, Adam Copeland made his shock debut after not re-signing with WWE earlier in the year and was officially All Elite.
Looking to finish his career on his terms and compete in new matches, Copeland’s first order of business was to reunite with his best friend. As Copeland pleaded his case and stated that Killswitch and Nick Wayne would betray him, Cage watched on silently. When Copeland finished his pitch, the two men embraced and seemingly put their differences behind them. However, just seconds later, Cage uttered the words “Go f*ck yourself” to the Hall of Famer before making his way to the back.
“I Wanted To Leave People’s Jaws On The Floor”: Christian Cage
The short clip went viral on social media and was used in multiple clips in and out of the wrestling world. Looking back at the success of the segment with Chris Van Vliet, Cage explained his reasoning and that he wanted to give a response so shocking that it got a reaction, which was very much achieved:
“When he hugged me, and most of the time, 99.9% of the time, you’d hear somebody say no, yes or no. I wanted to leave people’s jaws on the floor with my response, something so out of left field that they weren’t gonna believe that was my response to my childhood lifelong friend. Closer than friends, brothers. I just wanted something that would just get people talking, and it did.”
Continuing, the AEW star discussed the impact the phrase left on the wider world and how he was on the receiving end of the insult from Tool guitarist Adam Jones:
“I expected it to be big, I didn’t expect it to be as viral as it was. It went beyond wrestling. I was at a Tool concert. I went in to watch soundcheck and the guitarist Adam Jones, I could see him whispering to his security guy that knew that I was there. And he pointed over to me. He’s playing, getting ready for his big show. He looks at me and goes ‘Go f*ck yourself’ from the stage. Yeah, it resonated with people.”
