The Rock Vs Roman Reigns Still Planned For WrestleMania 39

The Rock and Roman Reigns

Despite The Rock’s busy movie schedule, it looks like he still has a date with his cousin Roman Reigns next year.

Roman Reigns overcame The Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam in a brutal Last Man Standing match to retain his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. The Tribal Chief has now passed the 700-day mark as Universal Champion and shows no signs of slowing down.

Although Reigns has some tough competition ahead of him in the form of Drew McIntyre and a returning Karrion Kross, many still believe Reigns won’t drop any of his two titles until next year when WrestleMania goes Hollywood. On top of that, there is still speculation that Reigns will end up facing his cousin The Rock on that show.

According to Dave Meltzer from Wrestling Observer Radio, there are still plans to have Reigns vs. Rock at WrestleMania next year. He stated that although this is the current plan, it’s entirely reliant upon The Great One’s availability.

“It’s the plan. It’s 100% the plan for this year (WrestleMania 39). But the idea is, it’s the plan if he can do it. We’re still months away, months and months away. So many opportunities and things like that may come up that are far more important than WrestleMania.”

It’s been suggested by other reports that Cody Rhodes challenging for the title, could be an alternative if The Rock can’t make it for next year’s big event. Rhodes is already heavy favourite to win the 2023 Royal Rumble match, and he has spoken often of his dream of winning the WWE Championship.

As for whether Reigns will remain champion heading into WrestleMania 39, he has to get through the likes of McIntyre and Kross. The latter did make a subtle message to The Tribal Chief this past week on SmackDown that his time as champion may be coming to a close. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen.
