Despite appearing to confirm his retirement in an interview with Live With Kelly And Ryan last year, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson might not be totally done with pro wrestling.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel with long time collaborator Hiram Garcia, The Rock, a 10-time world champion, discussed the possibility of facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.
“It’s so funny how people always say, ‘Well if you ever go back to WrestleMania, who would be the opponent that you would face?’ Feels like the one that would make the most sense, right, would be Roman. In terms of box office draw [It would be huge]”
The pair then joked about any kind of match immediately being turned into a series, before Johnson dangled the carrot once more.
“The truth is, I would be honoured, not only to share the ring with Roman, and go back in the WWE. But, of course man, I would be honoured to have him raise his hand in that one.”
The 48-year-old hasn’t appeared on WWE television since cutting a promo alongside Becky Lynch on the first episode of SmackDown on Fox last year. He hasn’t competed in any kind of serious match since WrestleMania 29, seven years ago. (His brief outing against the Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32 notwithstanding)
Putting together a match and making enough appearances to build that match would be a logistical nightmare for someone with Johnson’s extensive movie and media schedule. But that doesn’t mean that it would be impossible.
The possibility of The Rock returning to the WWE for a match of any kind still looks fairly remote, but it seems not even ‘The Great One’ can escape that old wrestling adage, never say never.
