Austin Theory is the subject of growing rumors and speculation as uncertainty surrounds his WWE future. Theory’s run has been back-and-forth over the years, and his storyline with Grayson Waller may be ending without a pay-off. Sources have revealed various updates on the matter.
A-Town Down Under formed after Theory and Waller were sent to SmackDown in the 2023 WWE Draft. Six months and 15 days later, Waller and Theory left WrestleMania XL as WWE Tag Team Champions after winning a Six-Pack Ladder Match that also saw Awesome Truth win the World Tag Team Championship.
The Now and The 21st Century Success Story began teasing a split almost one year ago after DIY ended their reign at 90 days. Theory and Waller were sent back to RAW earlier this year via the transfer window, and this included a brief NXT run. Waller aligned with The New Day during RAW on July 21, revealing that A-Town Down Under was finished because of an injury to Theory, which WWE acknowledged but did not provide specifics on. Waller later insulted Theory on social media, and took credit for saving his career after being buried by John Cena in 2023.
Theory has not wrestled since the week before the aforementioned RAW segment. The 28-year-old was defeated by El Grande Americano at the pre-RAW Main Event tapings, which aired later that week. Waller took a Main Event loss to Penta at the July 21 tapings, then lost to Sheamus on the final RAW before SummerSlam. The 35-year-old was beat by Penta again on this week’s RAW.
While WWE has not issued an official update on Austin Theory’s status, PWInsider revealed just today that the two-time United States Champion was removed from the company’s internal active roster. This fueled talk of a potential release or other setback, especially with the lack of a follow-up to the apparent A-Town Down Under disbandment, and now there’s been an update from backstage.
Austin Theory WWE Status Update
Austin Theory is still under contract with WWE, and there is nothing to the rumors on a departure. Fightful Select adds that the 2022 Money In the Bank winner was not removed from the internal roster altogether, but is now listed with other Superstars on the shelf with injuries, such as Ilja Dragunov and Zoey Stark.
Sources were unable to elaborate on Austin Theory’s injury, but he is dealing with a legitimate issue. There was no estimate on when he may be back in action, but it appears the A-Town Down Under program is done. However, a Theory vs. Waller singles match is still possible.
A-Town Down Under last wrestled on June 23 at the pre-RAW tapings for WWE Main Event. They were defeated by The War Raiders.
