The Real Reason John Cena Used To Wear Dog Tags In WWE

John Cena has elaborated on his decision to wear dog tags to the ring while in WWE.

While the jorts would remain a constant throughout the 16-time World Champion’s in-ring career, Cena would adopt a variety of looks before ultimately settling on the bright T-shirt and towel combo that has been used in the latter stages of his career. Previously using a padlock on a chain during the Dr. of Thuganomics portion of his career, Cena would swap the chain for dog tags following his face turn, which took inspiration from the military.

Appearing alongside Awkwafina to take part in a WIRED Autocomplete interview to promote the upcoming movie Jackpot, Cena was asked why he used to wear dog tags and revealed that there was a personal connection to the accessory:

“My dog tags used to say the names of my parents, and my brothers. And it was my cop-out way of saying like ‘Hey, you guys are with me.’ But I wasn’t really, this is gonna get deep, I wasn’t really good at being a son and being a brother. So, rather than wear this thing that they could see on TV, what I began to do for them was show up. So I’m trying to be better at showing up and not using a talisman to be like ‘See, I’m there.’ So I ditched the dog tags for more one-on-one time.”

John Cena Addresses Emotions Ahead Of Upcoming Retirement

2025 will see Cena put on the jorts one final time as he competes in his final match. While many have stated that the upcoming retirement will be a bittersweet affair, John Cena sees things differently.

Not short on challengers, John Cena was recently called out by a current champion.
