The Pope Crowned NWA Television Champion On UWN Primetime Live

By Matt Tennant. Published 21st October 2020.
The Pope Thumb

On last night’s edition of United Wrestling Network’s Primetime Live, The Pope captured the NWA Television Championship when he defeated Zicky Dice in the main event.

The Pope, who only made his UWN Primetime Live debut on October 6, is the second man to cause a huge championship change on the television show after Trevor Murdoch shocked the world and pinned Aaron Stevens to snag the NWA National Championship on September 29.

The championship match was set-up on the October 6 edition of the show when the new champion teamed with Watts to defeat Zicky Dice and Effy in a fair effort.

Swapping the gold from Dice to the former Elijah Burke sorts a lot of NWA’s problems after it was reported earlier this summer that the former champion had requested his release from the promotion which was promptly denied.

One of the main reasons for keeping Dice tethered to his contract was the fact that he was carrying around the belt that he had won from Ricky Starks on the March 3 NWA Powerrr.

Not wanting to vacate the gold which would have required another tournament to crown a new champion when NWA Powerrr was off the airwaves, the promotion decided to exercise a roll-over in his contract to keep him at least until they could get the belt from him in a rational way.

Now that Zicky Dice is no longer NWA Television Champion, the promotion may be willing to release him to do other things.

UWN Primetime Live is a weekly pay-per-view series and co-production between the National Wrestling Alliance and United Wrestling Network and allows Billy Corgan’s promotion to keep their stars relevant until NWA Powerrr begins recording again.

You can watch UWN Primetime Live every Tuesday night on FITE.
