Gunther does not stress about the accolades he gets in WWE, as he is aware that it would not matter outside the pro wrestling bubble.
The commentators do not miss a chance to reiterate that The Ring General has been champion for 80% of his career in World Wrestling Entertainment. This includes his time in NXT as champion, the 666-day reign as Intercontinental Champion from June 2022 to April 2024, and his World Heavyweight Championship reigns between 2024 and 2025.
Despite all of that he has accomplished thus far, Gunther is down-to-earth about it. He shared his honest thoughts regarding the triumphs and tribulations in WWE.
Gunther Says His Son Won’t Care Whether He Main Events WWE WrestleMania Or Not
In 2025, Gunther had the opportunity to main event WrestleMania 41 as he walked into the spectacle as World Heavyweight Champion. He defended the belt against the Royal Rumble winner, Jey Uso. But what ultimately happened is their bout kicked off Night 1.
This sparked a conversation as The Ring General is believed to be one of the best wrestlers on the planet today, and he was world champion. Despite that, he was relegated to the opening contest rather than the show-closing bout.
On Six Feet Under With Mark Calaway, Gunther told WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker that accolades in the business do not matter to him as much as it does to the fans. Because at the end of the day, it starts and ends within the bubble.
For me personally, wrestling accolades … in our bubble, they are good achievements but when I’m outside of that, it’s not really. I don’t know, I don’t want to put stress on my life for that.
Before WrestleMania, there was this whole deal where like, is it gonna be the main with Jey and stuff like that.
You catch yourself a little bit where you’re like, ‘oh yeah, it should be, it’s for the title.’ But then, you kick out of it and go, at the end of the day, if I look my son in the face and tell him, ‘Son, I main evented WrestleMania,’ he’s not going to give a f**k about that,” Gunther said.
Gunther did finally get to the main event on a big stage, and that happened at SummerSlam Night 1 last weekend. He defended the Heavyweight belt against CM Punk in a losing effort. It remains to be seen if he will continue to be involved in the title picture.
