The John Cena Model Or ‘The Roman Reigns Schedule’? Top WWE Star Reveals Preference

John Cena Roman Reigns Cody Rhodes WWE Schedule 2025 Sports Illustrated SummerSlam

Cody Rhodes was asked if he wanted the Roman Reigns schedule in WWE: one that gives The American Nightmare leeway to be out of the picture for a prolonged period in a year, mostly between WrestleMania and SummerSlam.

The Tribal Chief character saved Roman Reigns in more ways than one, as he joined Paul Heyman in 2020 to ruffle some feathers and make WWE the sports entertainment capital of the world. The Bloodline remains a powerful group, and it all started with Reigns.

Long story short, perhaps nobody can legitimately make an argument that Roman Reigns should not be on television, as he is a huge box office draw, and it makes sense nowadays to use him as an attraction. So, what was The American Nightmare’s response?

Cody Rhodes Confesses To Lifting A Thing Or Two From John Cena’s Playbook

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Cody Rhodes admitted that he had modeled his wrestling career after John Cena, someone he used to drive around in the late aughts. The American Nightmare felt that after a certain point, the veterans had earned the right to call the shots.

However, he also added that for years, all he cared about was the pro wrestling business. It is what excited him most. But now, there were some other things that excited him just as much. Concluding his elaborate response, he reiterated the term “Maybe” with regard to working a Roman Reigns-like WWE schedule.

I think every wrestler who has made it […] has a different outlook. This is how I do it — it’s always good to take a little it. I particularly loved John [Cena]. I try to model my style after him,” Rhodes revealed. “I have come to find that I can’t do it exactly how he did it. I do have to do it how I’d like to do it. And my personal life is different than his.”

“I think at a certain point you earn the right as he did to call the shots you want to take. To me, a lot of that has to with where do you want to go.”

At SummerSlam, Cody Rhodes defeated John Cena to end the latter’s 17th World Title reign. On SmackDown five days later, WWE has set up The American Nightmare’s next challenger.
