While being in the main event of WrestleMania as the WWE Champion is the ultimate goal for many wrestlers, one star who did accomplish the goal has no recollection of it.
On an episode of Raw in 2010, The Miz cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Randy Orton to become the WWE Champion for the first time in his career. Still the champion when WrestleMania 27 rolled around, Miz put the title on the line against someone who is no stranger to winning the top prize in the industry, John Cena.
While at one point it looked like the match would end in a draw due to a double count-out, an intervention from WrestleMania host The Rock allowed the match to be restarted. Thanks to an assist from The Rock, Miz was able to capitalise and close out Mania still the champion.
While the moment is the biggest of The A Lister’s career, the 2-time World Champion has little recollection of it. In the closing moments of the match, Miz suffered a concussion when his head hit the concrete floor after being tackled by Cena.
In an interview with Alistair McGeorge of Metro, veteran referee Mike Chioda, who officiated the match, recalled helping Miz make his way to the end of the bout:
“I did a WrestleMania match with Miz, and I was calling him spots, calling him spots, calling him spots. And I knew he got his bell rung, but I didn’t know he didn’t remember the whole match.”
Continuing, Chioda recalled Miz being extremely thankful for helping him make it through to the end:
“He remembered a little bit here, a little bit there, a little bit there. When I got back, I was like, “Congratulations, man, congratulations”. I was like, “You okay, brother?” He’s like, “I don’t remember anything, really. I remember you telling me some spots”. And then I was like, he was listening to everything I was doing.” He was just very thankful for getting him through that, because if he doesn’t get through that, you never know if there’s another moment like that for Miz down the road, you know?”
