In 1999, Curt Hennig, whilst best known for his time in the late 80s and early 90s in WWE as “Mr Perfect”, was still looked at as a prominent figure amongst fans and his peers in WCW.
Mikey Whipwreck was best known, not only for his time in ECW but also for his brief stint in 1999 for WCW. Speaking for Wrestling Shoot Interviews, ECW triple crown winner Mikey Whipwreck recalls meeting the former Mr Perfect, Curt Hennig after joining rivals WCW.
Before my match with Kidman, I introduced myself to Curt (cos I’m like, “holy f**k. This is Curt Henning! Like, this is f**king great!). He shook my hand… totally blew me off. Like, “yeah, okay”. And just walked away. I’m like, “well, that sucked! Mr Perfect just totally blew me off. F**king great.”
Not long after this, Whipwreck ran into Hennig’s former manager, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan for a very different experience.
“That was a f**king great introduction of somebody.”
However, the AEW trainer and global ambassador was taken aback when he was surprised by Hennig following his scheduled match.
“And then after the match with Kidman, Curt Hennig comes up and goes “Curt Hennig, it’s a pleasure to meet you!” I’m like “Oh, Curt. I met you before” he goes, “no, no, no.” He goes “that didn’t count. I just thought you were like some other s**thead they brought in here who doesn’t know what the f**k he’s doing! …You can work! Welcome aboard!” And he shook my hand. So now I’m on like f**king cloud nine!”
Whipwreck’s time in WCW was short, making his debut at Uncensored in March 99 against then WCW Cruiserweight Champion Bill Kidman before leaving just months later following disillusionment with his lack of push.
Which Mr Perfect Rivalry Does Eric Bischoff Think Didn’t Work
In the early 90’s WWE, Mr Perfect Curt Hennig found himself in a brief feud with Hulk Hogan, which failed to sell out the hallowed grounds of Madison Square Gardens. Speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, Bishoff felt that the reason was due to Hennig’s cocky persona “wasn’t a believable threat to Hulk Hogan at the time. Curt was a cocky, entertain-y heel, and I don’t think a cocky, entertain-y heel provided a believable enough threat to Hulk Hogan.”
In recent news, Sabu spoke about how Vince McMahon branded him “too dangerous.”
