The Butcher of AEW has been discussing the origins of his character and his tag team with The Blade in All Elite Wrestling.
The duo would make their AEW debut along with The Bunny in November 2019 when they viciously attacked Cody Rhodes. It was later revealed that the pair had been hired by MJF, who was feuding with Rhodes after turning his back on him earlier in the year.
In conversation with fellow AEW star Miro, The Butcher explained where the idea for their characters came from:
“I came up with these two weird characters based on 90s movies specialty thugs. This isn’t like the main heel, this is the guy you have to beat to get to the heel. When the local guys can’t get it done, they have to call the weird guys from Milwaukee and they have to get it done. They have weird characteristics that are never explained, like a monocule and a weird mask. They’re just hitmen for hire.
The Butcher continued:
People ask me, ‘what is your character?’ I’m like, ‘watch any 90s action movie. A character like me will show up.’ That’s the whole thing. I just told it to Jesse [The Blade] because he’s such a 90s movie buff and was like, ‘let’s just be weird dudes that never get anything explained. We’ll call ourselves The Butcher and The Blade. You always refer to me as Butch and I’ll refer to you as Blade.’ That’s it.”
The Butcher and The Blade have been associated with Eddie Kingston in recent months. That trio will take on the unlikely team of IWGP US Champion Jon Moxley, Lance Archer, and Rey Fenix on AEW Dynamite.
