CM Punk was rumored to step inside the squared circle late last year to face World Heavyweight Champion Gunther, but WWE went in another direction. Eight months later, Punk vs. The Ring General is one of the co-main events of the upcoming SummerSlam PLE.
Ahead of his match against Gunther, The Best in the World revealed he does not have a lot of time left in the ring. Be that as it may, he was also not interested in a “speed run” through the roster. He wants to work with a handful of talents he knows are the future of WWE, and put The Ring General on top of that list.
CM Punk Says Gunther Is At The Top Of The List Of WWE Stars He Wants to Work With
In an interview with ComicBook Nation, CM Punk named Bron Breakker, Chad Gable, and Damian Priest as some talents he looks at and knows will run the show for years to come.
He singled out his opponent for The Biggest Party of the Summer, stating that Gunther had been on his list for quite some time.
I’m surrounded everyday by such talented people, but I don’t think I have the time to work with all of them,” Punk reflected, quickly adding, “Especially to the extent that I want to. So I’m not trying to do a speed run and share the ring with everybody. But Gunther is at the top of the list of people that I look at — they’re not only the present, they’re definitely the future of the business.”
Punk then began naming the WWE stars he believes will rule the roost eventually:
Bron Breakker, Chad Gable, and Damian Priest. There’s all these guys that I look at and go, ‘Oh man, I want to get in there with them!’ and I immediately start cooking up ideas.”
The former WWE and AEW World Champion defeated Bron Breakker in a Gauntlet Match that headlined RAW this past Monday. This earned him a shot at Gunther’s title at SummerSlam.
Will CM Punk prevail against The Ring General? Is the World Heavyweight Champion’s second reign going to remain intact? Or, is a supposedly injured star going to crash the party? We will find out on August 2-3 at the first-ever two-night SummerSlam Premium Live Event.
