Tay Melo, the former Tay Conti, has wrestled significantly less in 2022 compared to 2021 – but this hasn’t affected Tay’s confidence in the slightest!
A quick glance at Tay Melo‘s Cagematch profile shows a stark contrast in her output of in-ring content from 2022 in comparison to last year. A combined 53 matches in AEW from her in 2021 is yet to be matched, as she’s wrestled just eight times in the Tony Khan-helmed promotion this year.
This hasn’t hurt Tay’s determination in herself as a performer, though. The former NXT Superstar joined Denise Salcedo recently to discuss how she’s content with her current performance, noting how Tony Khan has worked well in keeping talent like herself on television, despite their lack of in-ring output:
“There’s one thing that Tony does really well. It’s like, trying to keep people on TV. We just have three hours on TV a week, and we have like an entire roster. It’s crazy – it’s not enough time, you know, but I feel Tony does a really good job trying to keep everybody there. It’s a circle – sometimes it’s going to be your time and sometimes it’s going to be someone else’s moment.”
Tay Melo continued, explaining how appreciative she is to have had the opportunities she’s had in such a short space of time:
“I’m super grateful because, in 2021, I was having a great time. I was on almost every pay-per-view. I feel like that was my opportunity to grow, and I took it really well. But right now, it’s somebody else’s moment, and that is okay because I’m not sitting in catering [and] doing nothing. Tony found a way to keep me on TV, which I appreciate so much. I know I’m not involved in title matches or crazy storylines, but it’s not my moment. Other people need opportunities, too.
And for him [Tony] to think about me, and try to keep me on TV even when I’m supposed to be on my lows, is really special. So, I took my opportunity and I’m doing my best with [Chris] Jericho, working and learning from him, and being involved in storylines where I’m not the main person – but my face and name are still out there.”
As Tay Conti, the current AAA World Mixed Tag Team Champion debuted for All Elite Wrestling in the summer of 2020, teaming with Anna Jay as part of the Women’s Tag Team Cup. She’s signed on full-time, and has challenged for both the AEW Women’s World and TBS Championships, as well as the NWA World Women’s Championship.
Currently, Tay Melo is aligned with her newly-wed husband Sammy Guevara as part of The Jericho Appreciation Society. She quietly joined the stable when ‘The Spanish God’ realigned himself with his former Inner Circle brethren.
