Swerve Strickland has revealed that when he was in NXT, Triple H actually stopped him from using a script during promos.
For a number of years, one of the main criticisms of WWE has been their insistence on having Superstars use scripted promos. While there are exceptions to the rule, many modern WWE stars have less input on their promos than performers have in years past.
It’s a point that has been raised numerous times by Attitude Era stars who have commented that they were given vast amounts of freedom on the microphone.
However, a now AEW star has revealed that while he was in NXT, Triple H actually stopped him using a script when cutting promos.
Speaking during an appearance on Talk Is Jericho with Chris Jericho, Swerve Strickland who was known as Isaiah “Swerve” Scott in NXT, recalled Triple H telling staff to make sure he doesn’t use a script anymore.
“We did Great American Bash and we [Strickland and Leon Ruff] had a blow-off match. That’s when Hit Row was introduced. I was cutting promos in the studio backstage and Triple H was like ‘Nope – take away the script. Don’t let him use the script anymore.’ So I was like ‘cool'”
After the formation of Hit Row, the group earned plaudits for their performances while Strickland won the NXT North American Championship. Despite this, shortly after arriving on the main roster the group were released.
Following his departure from WWE, Strickland moved to AEW making his debut at Revolution in March. The star was most recently in action on the April 27th edition of Rampage where he was defeated by Darby Allin following interference from Ricky Starks. On the following episode of Dynamite Strickland cut a promo with Keith Lee vowing to get their hands on Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs.
