Who should Sting’s final opponent be?
At AEW Revolution 2024, The Icon will be the latest legend of the wrestling world to compete for the final time. With the date and venue confirmed for the Hall of Famer’s last outing, the only thing left to be confirmed is the final foe.
Fans have pitched multiple theories as to who should receive the honour of being a part of the Hall of Famer’s retirement match. Some fans believe that Darby Allin should be Sting’s opponent due to their close allegiance and following the tradition of a veteran elevating a younger star on the way out. Others have joked that long-time rival Ric Flair may come out of retirement once again for the occasion.
While the chosen foe is still unknown, fellow Hall of Famer Goldberg has made the surprising revelation that he has previously pitched himself to be a part of the historic match.
Speaking with Steve & Captain Evil, Goldberg stated how much The Icon means to him on a personal and professional level, going on to say that he tried to be a part of the match at Revolution 2024:
“Sting is the reason why I broke into the business. Sting set a great example. He’s about to retire. I tried to be part of his retirement match. I would not have chosen to get into the world of professional wrestling if it wasn’t for Sting. He was a normal dude who went out and did abnormal things. Wrestling is like being in the circus, it truly is. I never looked at it with much respect, but after I watched him from afar, I realized that I had the ability to go do it.
He was not only a performer. He had self-respect and he commanded respect. He’s one of the best human beings on the planet and he set an example for me and I just tried to grab it and run with it and make him proud. I had the best time of my life in the ring with Sting,”
Goldberg and Sting have not been in the same ring together since their WCW days. Their final match together took place in October 2000 on an episode of Thunder, where the two Hall of Famers teamed up with Booker T to defeat the trio of Jeff Jarrett and Kronik. Despite having faced off against each other on 4 separate occasions, Sting was never able to defeat Goldberg during their time together in WCW.
During the same interview, the WWE Hall of Famer let his true feelings of Vince McMahon be known.
Sting’s Retirement Match Sees Strong Ticket Sales
Despite The Icon’s opponent yet to be confirmed at the time of writing, AEW Revolution 2024 has proved to be a popular event amongst fans and could be their most attended show in the United States next year. In the latest update by WrestleTix on December 26th, 13,440 tickets have been sold for the March pay-per-view.
