At Survivor Series 2016 Goldberg shocked the world when he defeated Brock Lesnar in less than two minutes, but who pitched the stunning slaying of The Beast?
When Goldberg walked out on Monday Night Raw in October 2016 it marked the first time that he had appeared at a WWE event in more than a decade.
The WCW legend had last set in a foot in a WWE ring at WrestleMania XX when he squared off against Brock Lesnar. With both stars already revealing they were leaving the company, the crowd viciously turned on the match and only cheered special guest referee Stone Cold Steve Austin.
So perhaps it was only fitting that when he finally returned to the company, he resumed his rivalry with The Beast.
After weeks of build-up the stage was finally set and Goldberg stood across from Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Incredibly, the match was over in a minute and a half, with the former WCW star standing tall.
Speaking during an appearance on Talk Is Jericho, Goldberg reflected on arguably his most famous WWE moment. Looking back on the match, the former Universal Champion revealed that it was actually Lesnar who suggested he be defeated in under two minutes.
“You know, I came in for a reason. Again, Brock needed an adversary, he needed a worthy adversary and he needed somebody that he could even up the score against, and there weren’t too many people who were believable. And there weren’t too many people that hadn’t retired that had a story like mine that had the history with him. And, you know, the character has had different iterations throughout time.
I came back even more simplistic than I left, which was easier for me as an elder statesman, but not nearly as fulfilling, but then you learn the inner workings of the wrestling business. And I’ll tell you what, and I never would have said this before, and I don’t think you ever would have said it before, but Brock Lesnar is an absolute mastermind.
I mean, he really is and that’s something that I never saw coming ever, especially from a guy that, you know, talked bullsh*t about the business prior to getting into it that he never would have never would get into the fake wrestling thing, considering he was a real wrestler. And lo and behold, he looks at the opportunity, takes advantage of it and sh*t, he’s got a rocket ship up his butt to the moon.
And it was an honour for me to still be looked upon as somebody who was a worthy competitor and a worthy challenge for him. And you know, Brock’s the one that came up with the 90 second deal, right? You know, me I’m not gonna walk in and say ‘Oh, I’m gonna wait 12 years I’m going to beat Brock in 60 seconds, 90 seconds and that’s me and I’m gone.’ It doesn’t work like that.
And so I learned a lot from Brock. And I learned a lot about who he is and about how creative he is and how unselfish he is. And that those are things that people would definitely be surprised about when talking about Brock Lesnar.”
Following his shock victory at Survivor Series Goldberg continued to make a handful of appearances per-year all the way up until early 2022 when he was defeated by Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber.
The star recently revealed that despite that match being the last on his current deal, he remains under contract with the company.
