In the wake of the announcement that she will be competing in the Royal Rumble, Summer Rae has revealed that the appearance was meant to be a surprise.
On the January 7th episode of Friday Night SmackDown WWE announced a whole raft of entrants into both the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches.
While Jackass star Johnny Knoxville and Sheamus were added on the men’s side, the women’s match saw entrants confirmed from WWE’s past and present, as well as the current IMPACT Knockouts Champion. One of the returning stars on the list alongside The Bella Twins and Lita was Summer Rae.
Danielle Moinet, better known as Summer Rae in WWE initially signed with the company back in late 2011. She wrestled on NXT, became Fandango’s valet and dance partner before eventually being released in October 2017. During her time with WWE, the star was also a regular feature on Total Divas.
As the news broke that the Summer Rae would be competing at the Royal Rumble, she took to social media to thank fans for all of their positive messages. Speaking in clips posted to her Instagram stories, Summer Rae also revealed that the appearance was meant to be a surprise, and she was unaware that WWE were going to make an announcement.
“Okay, so obviously I can’t sleep. I’ve been on Twitter and I am so overwhelmed by the amazing response on Twitter by you guys,” Summer writes. “Oh my gosh, like, we weren’t even supposed to announce that I was going to be in the Rumble, it was going to be a surprise and then, I found out a couple of hours ago. So I was really nervous to look on Twitter, because people are mean, like, people just be mean on Twitter and the response — everyone was so nice. You guys have me in my feels.
“Everyone’s so hyped. I don’t know, I’ve just been gone so long that I didn’t know what the response would be like, I didn’t know if it’d be positive or negative and it’s just so good. Thank you so much. All my friends are being so supportive and just the fans like, Wrestle-Twitter’s just insane, and I’m just so excited, and now I’m happy that I don’t have to keep this a surprise until the end of the month.”

Arguably the most surprising name to feature in the announcement was that of current Knockouts Champion Mickie James. The former Women’s Champion hasn’t appeared in WWE since being released in April 2021.
Away from the Royal Rumble match itself it has been announced that Sasha Banks will miss the event through injury. WWE have confirmed that The Boss will be out of action for around two months.
