Steven Borden, the son of wrestling legend Sting, recently opened up about the “tough conversation” he had with his father when he revealed his aspirations to become a professional wrestler.
Appearing on The Von Erichs podcast, Borden discussed his journey into the world of wrestling and how he has been preparing for an in-ring career. Borden admitted that telling his father Sting about his wrestling ambitions wasn’t easy.
When I told him I wanted to wrestle? Uh, no, that was a tough conversation [laughs]. I was dreading it. You guys probably got a similar lecture [from Kevin Von Erich].
Despite the initial apprehension, Borden has been working hard to follow in his father’s footsteps. Although he had minimal experience in the ring before participating in Sting’s AEW retirement match, Borden has since dedicated himself to training. He has been working with wrestling veterans like Darby Allin, Adam Copeland, and FTR. Borden has also been flying between California and North Carolina to continue his training.
I train as often as I can.
He shared, expressing hope that his work with Copeland and FTR will become a long-term commitment. Borden also credited Allin and WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix for their support in his development as a wrestler. A former college football player, Borden played tight end at the University of Kentucky and even pursued opportunities to join an NFL roster post-college.
What Is Sting’s New Role With AEW Following His Retirement?
Sting revealed that he has signed a new multi-year deal with AEW following his retirement at AEW Revolution and that his new deal is similar to a WWE Legends deal which includes licensing for merchandise as well as some non-wrestling appearances. He also said that he has gotten back into real estate, a passion that he had long before wrestling.
