Sting’s last-ever match was one that few could have predicted.
Retiring at AEW Revolution 2024, the date and location were set for the finale of a legendary career. The only thing left to be confirmed was the opponent. With there being no previous hints as to who this could be, many had made the case for long-time ally Darby Allin to face off against The Icon due to their close relationship throughout AEW. However, as was seen on the January 10th episode of Dynamite, it appears that the duo will partner up once more.
The main event of the show saw the Hall of Famer and Allin defeat Konosuke Takeshita and Powerhouse Hobbs in a Texas Tornado match. With pinfalls counting anywhere, the Hall of Famer pinned Hobbs after hitting a Scorpion Death Drop off an elevated platform through multiple tables.
Tony Schiavone made his way to the ring after the match and stated that March 3rd was fast approaching. Schiavone then asked The Icon who the final opponent would be. Before The Icon could answer he was interrupted by the return of The Young Bucks, who made their return for the first time since Full Gear and seemingly setting up the clash at the next pay-per-view.
With the match of the former World Champion and Allin vs. The Young Bucks all but confirmed, the response has not been as emphatic as some would have hoped. Some fans online have been more critical than others, with comments stating that it is an anti-climactic way of ending the Hall of Famer’s career.
When discussing the match on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer had an alternative take, stating that this is a smart choice for the marquee match:
The big news is that Sting’s last match is Sting and Darby Allin, against The Young Bucks. And it was not a match I expected. But as soon as I heard the match, it was like this match makes so much sense. The one thing about The Young Bucks, there is no tag team in wrestling in the last how many years, maybe even ever, but certainly in the last 20 years there is no tag team in wrestling that is better at carrying people to good matches.
Sting’s Final Match Sees Huge Demand In Ticket Sales
Revolution looks set to be the largest crowd the promotion will draw in North America in 2024. In a recent update regarding AEW Revolution, the show has reportedly sold more than 15,000 tickets and new sections are frequently opened up to accommodate additional demand.
