Stone Cold Steve Austin has rebuffed a possible return to in-ring action.

Speaking on Talk is Jericho, The Texas Rattlesnake was a guest on the podcast to break down some of his most iconic matches. At the end of the episode, Chris Jericho asked if Steve had ever considered a return to the ring. The Bionic Redneck’s last match for WWE was against The Rock at WrestleMania 19. Austin said he had been asked about a comeback by Vince McMahon:

“Man, not really. You know I think Vince tried talking me into coming back a couple of times, and damn near talked me into it one time. But man, Chris I just love the business. I can’t say I love it more than anybody else, I can only speak for myself. I love the damn business, and it hurt me so much to leave it.”

Austin then went on to explain the challenges that he would face if he were to return. These including the physical challenges and the match itself just being a one-off. As an example, he compared his hypothetical comeback to what The Undertaker had to go through to get ready for each one off match at WrestleMania:

“If you’re really going to make a comeback, let’s say it’s going to be a high profile match, like a WrestleMania. When I talk to Undertaker, he trained all year, or recovered from having surgery, then trained for 3-4 month camp to get ready for one match. So I would really have to undergo a 3-4 month camp. I’m like OK, I’m one of those guys that don’t have an addictive personality, but I’m addicted to the wrestling business. All of a sudden if I put in all that hard work, and get back to being around the ring and being around the business that is my number one passion in my life. To get hooked on it again just for one match. To me it would have been so anticlimactic. Just to go out there and do it, and whatever the finish was, then the people all go home.”

Austin finished off by expressing that he didn’t want either himself or the fans to be disappointed in the match.

“What does it mean in the big picture? Stone Cold had a comeback and the match was a 3.5 [On the Meltzer 5* rating], that ain’t great enough, you know what I’m saying? Even if I crushed it, what would it mean? If I can’t be 110% Stone Cold Steve Austin, it wasn’t worth it. So I just said man, stay away. And I’ve stayed away.”

In the same episode, the WWE Hall of Famer also discussed his favourite match ever.
