Steve Austin has offered his honest opinion on Ric Flair returning to the ring at the age of 73.
During his career, Ric Flair has had numerous ‘last matches.’ While it appears that the idea of retirement is not something that Flair is against, the simple fact is that he’s the Nature Boy, and what’s the Nature Boy unless he’s styling and profiling in front of thousands of fans?
Despite this, following Flair’s most recent match in 2011 against Sting, many believed that he was done. After all his prime was a long time in the rear-view mirror and he has suffered numerous health problems. But on July 31st, the 16-time World Champion will walk the aisle one more time.
Flair’s decision to wrestle again has divided public opinion, with some feeling he deserves one more outing, while others fail to see what it achieves.
Speaking in a new interview with Sportskeeda, WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin has now weighed in on the issue. Ironically, Austin recently broke his own vow of retirement at WrestleMania 38 when he defeated Kevin Owens. The bout was his first in 19 years.
With regard to Flair, The Texas Rattlesnake praised him as the greatest travelling world champion of all-time.
“Well, it’s gonna be his final match, so I guess he’s in the mood to have one more go and prove he was the man. I’ve said before just talking to you I think he was the greatest traveling world champion that there ever was. There’s a reason he had the belt as many times as he did. He was that damn good. He lived the lifestyle on the road to the nth degree, let’s say.”
Continuing on, Austin explained that he has the highest respect for Flair, and wishes he could be at the show at Starrcast V.
“For him to have his final match, I wish him nothing but the best,” Austin continued. “I hold him in the highest regard and have the highest respect for him. I’m behind everything he does in the ring. I look forward to seeing it. I wish I could be there in person. Again, I’m not traveling anywhere right now, but I wish him all the best and I know it’s gonna turn out great and I can’t wait to watch it.”
On July 18th it was announced that Flair will be teaming with his son-in-law Andrade El Idolo to take on Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett at event. He has also confirmed that his daughter, WWE star Charlotte will also be in attendance.
