Sonya Deville Details “Long, Treacherous Recovery Process” From Recent Injury

Sonya Deville stands in-ring WWE SmackDown 2022

Sonya Deville returned to WWE television earlier this year after a 9-month absence due to injury.

On the May 20th edition of Monday Night Raw, Deville appeared in a backstage segment with Zoey Stark and Shayna Baszler. Over the following weeks, Deville recruited the service of the Stark and Baszler and the trio became known as the Pure Fusion Collective. The faction has since attacked several tag teams in a quest to hold the Women’s Tag Team Championships once again.

Before her injury, Deville held the titles with Chelsea Green. The Unlikely duo became champions when they defeated Raquel Rodriguez and Liv Morgan on July 17th, 2023. However, Sonya Deville suffered a torn ACL and was forced to relinquish the championship 28 days later.

During an interview with WWE Deutschland Deville spoke about the long and arduous journey she had to travel in order to get back into the ring.

“I don’t wish it upon anyone. It’s a long, treacherous recovery process,” Deville said. “You think you’re gonna get the surgery and then a couple months [are] going to go by and you’re going to feel great [but] it takes a very long time. I was back to lifting and back to working out months into the process, but then I still couldn’t run, or sprint, or cut.”

Sonya Deville Got Married During Her Recovery

The former SmackDown General Manager wed her partner Toni Cassano in an “intimate” ceremony on February 10th at The Legacy Castle in New Jersey.

The couple, who announced their engagement last year, exchanged their vows in front of 140 guests including several of Deville’s WWE colleagues such as Charlotte Flair, Andrade, Bayley, Montez Ford, Bianca Belair, Liv Morgan, Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green, Mandy Rose, Vic Joseph and McKenzie Mitchell were all in attendance.

The ceremony was officiated by television presenter Maria Menounos while People magazine were on hand to document the wedding.
