Sonya Deville has revealed that she was afraid to return to her own neighbourhood after a man broke into her home in an alleged attempt to kidnap her.
Throughout the summer of 2020, Sonya Deville engaged in a feud with her former on-screen partner Mandy Rose. The rivalry was due to culminate in a “hair vs. hair match” at SummerSlam that year, although the stipulation was later changed to “Loser leaves WWE.”
While Deville was enjoying a strong run inside the ring, her life outside of it took a terrifying turn. On August 16th 2020, a man was caught breaking into her home in an attempt to kidnap her.
The man was later charged with aggravated stalking, armed burglary of a dwelling, attempted armed kidnapping, and criminal mischief. Despite originally facing the possibility of life in prison, the man was later found incompetent to stand trial. As a result he was eventually committed to a mental health treatment facility.
Speaking during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Deville recalled the aftermath of the incident and being too afraid to return home.
“It’s been a crazy ride and you never know something like that is gonna happen until it happens,”
“And you don’t know how you’re gonna feel about something like that happening until it happens. I’ll just say, the day of, I was like, ‘Oh, everything’s fine. I’m gonna go sleep in my house tonight.’ And then by the time nightfall came I was – like, couldn’t even drive to the neighbourhood. So, it’s crazy.”
Following the incident, Deville went on hiatus from WWE, not returning until January 2021. Upon returning, Deville appeared mostly as an authority figure, but has begun to wrestle more frequently in recent months.
The star explained that she is excited to be stepping back inside the ropes.
“And definitely being on the other side of things, it feels good to be back in the mix and finally getting back in the ring since then,” Deville said. “It’s kinda like a big full-circle moment for me. So I’m excited.”
Sonya Deville is currently wrapped up in a rivalry with Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair. On the most recent episode of the red brand, Deville faced the EST for her title but was ultimately unsuccessful.
