“So Many People Told Us This Is Stupid”: Big E Recalls Defying WWE Expectations

Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were determined to make The New Day a success no matter what.

In July 2014, fans first got a glimpse of what was to come as the trio first formed. However, the faction was then absent for a number of months as creative did not think that the idea would work. Fellow Superstars also had their reservations on what was next, with The Big Show advising Kingston to focus on his singles career and not be part of the comedy group.

Speaking with UnDrafted AllStarz, Big E recalled how many people would repeatedly tell them that it was a bad idea to persist with developing The New Day and it only made them want to try harder:

“We had so many people tell us, ‘No, this idea is stupid. You’ll never get off the ground. We really had this ‘We against the world’ feeling and, often times in those situations, they can either break you apart or bring you together. We had the mentality of like ‘We’re gonna make this work. I don’t care how many people are telling us this will never work.'”

Later in the year, vignettes for The New Day would start to air on TV, leading to a re-debut and multiple evolutions of the group. Against all odds, the group would become one of the most successful tag teams of all time and at one point had the single longest reign with the tag titles in company history.

The former WWE Champion continued, revealing how The New Day knew what they had was special, even if the higher-ups did not:

“Sometimes people don’t see the vision. They don’t see what you see. We can see, we have the vision, it doesn’t matter if no one else sees it.”

Big E Wants To Finish The Story

Collectively, The New Day has won 15 championships in the company, with 12 of those being tag title reigns. With Woods being the only member to not win a top championship in the trio, Big E is still campaigning for a Xavier Woods World Championship run.
