It seems WWE’s penchant for changing Superstar’s names has struck again.
Over the years fans have seen several performers undergo name changes. Former NXT UK Champion Walter became Gunther, Pete Dunne was called Butch before going back to his original name while others lost their surnames or had them changed. Shotizi Blackheart is now known as Shotzi and former NXT Women’s Champion Raquel Gonzalez became Raquel Rodriguez.
Now, Humberto Carillo is going under a new moniker and will simply be known as Berto. The name change came as the Mexican Superstar joined the SmackDown roster as part of Legado del Fantasma. On the December 22nd edition of the blue brand, Carillo alongside Angel Garza, joined forces with Santos Escobar to revive the faction. Over the next few weeks he was announced as and referred to as Humberto, until the February 2nd episode when he was reintroduced as Berto.
This isn’t the first time Humberto Carillo has been the subject of a name change in WWE.
Since he arrived in 2018, Humberto has been known by both “Humberto” and “Humberto Carrillo,” with WWE switching between the two on several occasions. The reason for this latest change remains unknown.
Fightful Select reported they have reached to the company to discover the reasoning behind the name abbreviation but stated they “weren’t given a reason why Humberto Carrillo was given the name “Berto” before noting that he was also referred to as such on the official company website.
Berto’s partner and cousin, Angel Garza also received a new name and will now be known as Angel on Friday Night SmackDown.
