Music sensation Poppy has recently opened up on her friendship with Io Shirai in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment!
Speaking to Ryan Reed, Poppy discussed her experience working with WWE – including performing “Scary Mask” on NXT twice, who inspired her to begin working with the company and her real-life friendship with NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai!
The pop-metal hybrid artist explained how she and Shirai have subsequently become friends after playing her to the ring on the October 30th 2019 episode of NXT and NXT Halloween Havoc this year, as well as her reaction to Shirai’s dive from the top of WarGames with a trash can over her head at NXT TakeOver: WarGames!
“I played the intro music for Io Shirai, and we’ve become friends. She’s one of my favorite wrestlers now. She had a bit recently where she put a trash can over her head and jumped into a group of girls during a match, which was awesome. I love wrestling, so when I had an invitation to come play, I had to do it.”
Poppy also discussed the rigorous testing WWE had her go through before appearing at Halloween Havoc, saying that the company “run a very tight ship.”
“[Before the 2020 appearance], I had to go through some pretty intensive testing and screenings because they run a very tight ship. Everyone had to wear masks — it was a whole process. But I was cleared, and it happened!”
Poppy made her first crossover with the world of wrestling back in January 2019 when her song “X” was used as the official theme for NXT TakeOver: Phoenix. She’s since made three appearances for the NXT brand – twice performing “Scary Mask” to lead Io Shirai to the ring as well as during the opener of TakeOver: Portland in February earlier this year.
