Shelton Benjamin took to social media on Sunday evening to dedicate his Tag Team Championship win to the late Shad Gaspard.
Benjamin, a member of The Hurt Business, defeated The New Day alongside stable mate Cedric Alexander to become the new WWE Raw Tag Team Champions at TLC on Sunday. After the match, Shelton took to Instagram to share a short but heartfelt message for his late friend Shad, stating:
Shad Gaspard was best known as one half of Cryme Tyme, a tag team that became fan favourites during the mid 2000’s. Gaspard signed with WWE in 2003, first appearing at the companies developmental promotion, Ohio Valley Wrestling. Alongside tag team partner JTG, Gaspard made his main roster debut in 2006, and would feud with the likes of The Highlanders, Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch and Duece & Domino.
Tragically, Shad Gaspard passed away in May of this year, whilst swimming with his son in Venice Beach, California. In a final heroic effort, Gaspard insisted the life guards rescued his son first, before disappearing under the water. Many tributes were paid to Shad following his death, including a tribute episode of WWE’s ‘The Bump’. Benjamin paid tribute to Gaspard following his death on social media in a moving tribute:
“Shad was that guy in your corner. His big smile, heart and personality impacted everyone around him. The world was a better place with him in it. Shad is a real life super hero and his energy and name will live on ❤️”
Shelton Benjamin’s Instagram post also featured pictures of him hugging Gaspard’s son, Aryeh. Shelton had also shared a picture of himself, Gaspard and Eddie Fatu, better known as Umaga on his Instagram page a few weeks prior with the caption “USOS Forever”.
