Sheamus Reveals Who He Fought Hard To Face At WrestleMania

Sheamus

Sheamus ended WrestleMania 37 holding aloft holding his newly won United States Championship.

At the showpiece event in Raymond James Stadium, the former World Champion defeated Riddle to claim his third United States Title. However, speaking in a new interview, the Irishman revealed that he actually wanted to face someone else at the show.

At the tail end of 2020, the real-life friendship between Drew McIntyre and Sheamus began to play itself onto television. The pair often appeared backstage together and joined forces in the ring on numerous occasions.

As the storyline evolved, Sheamus grew jealous of McIntyre’s success and the now rivals entered into a fierce feud. The two met in a brutal No Disqualification Match on RAW, before competing in a No Holds Barred Match at Fastlane. After the Scottish Warrior emerged victorious, the two men went their separate ways.

At WrestleMania McIntyre faced Bobby Lashley while Sheamus challenged Riddle.

Speaking in a new interview with BT Sport, Sheamus revealed that both men had actually fought hard to end their story on the ‘Grandest Stage of Them All’ rather than at Fastlane.

“We really were hoping this was gonna be WrestleMania. That’s where we felt the feud should basically climax, should come to an end at WrestleMania. I fought as hard as I could, we both did, to make that happen, but you do what you can do.”

McIntyre added that it was “disappointing” that the rivalry couldn’t come to a head back in front of fans.

“If you watch the pre-match video, it was WrestleMania worthy. The story, the real story. We can come back around, there is always next year’s WrestleMania. With the fans back, it’ll be new again. It certainly was disappointing.”

The pair were speaking as WWE prepares to roll into Las Vegas for SummerSlam. At the summer spectacular, Sheamus will defend his United States Title against Damian Priest. While Drew McIntyre will square off against Jinder Mahal in a heated grudge match.
