Having retired from active competition in March 2010, Shawn Michaels has gone on to take up several roles behind the scenes in WWE. He currently serves as Senior Vice President, Talent Development Creative.
Heralded as one of the world’s greatest wrestlers, there is arguably no one better than ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ for such a role. The job sees Michaels essentially in the role Paul ‘Triple H‘ Levesque once held in the brand, largely responsible for the general running of NXT and the roster’s development.
However, despite his many, many in-ring successes, Shawn Michaels has admitted that this job isn’t always easy for him. In fact, if he had his way, it appears he’d remain behind the scenes fully, preferring to be in such a capacity.
Shawn Michaels Finds It Hard Promoting NXT
In a new interview with David Shoemaker for The Ringer Wrestling Show, Shawn Michaels addressed how he’s found the role thus far, particularly when factoring in the shoes he has to fill of Triple H:
“Usually Hunter [Triple H] is the one that’s out there in front of the cameras doing all the talking for NXT. But his responsibilities have grown. It also means that mine have grown. The image of NXT still needs to be represented; that falls on me. Clearly I’m thrilled to be able to do that.”
Elaborating, the two-time WWE Hall of Famer stated how he sometimes finds the role of promoting NXT difficult:
“It is a new role for me. I usually am more comfortable behind the scenes in doing my job, but this is an exciting new time. I love the men and women in NXT. I love helping them out. The hardest aspect of the job for me, to be perfectly honest, is getting out there and promoting NXT.
It’s intimidating to have to follow in the footsteps of everything Hunter created here.”
Though he was promoted to his new role only recently, it’s been about a “year and a half” since Shawn Michaels became a Vice President of WWE, contrary to popular belief.
