Shawn Michaels has addressed the newest WWE Championship that will be a part of NXT very soon.
First announced by General Manager Ava at Stand & Deliver, the first-ever NXT Women’s North American Champion will be crowned at Battleground on June 9th in a 6-woman ladder match. With the main roster only having one women’s singles championship on each brand and the booking of the Women’s Tag Team Championships not having the best track record, there are concerns that the Women’s North American Championship could be another title that gets lost in the shuffle. However, according to Michaels, the NXT women’s division is more than capable of making the championship meaningful.
Appearing on The Mark Hoke Show, Michaels credited the entire roster in NXT and as there are so many talented women on the roster it made sense to introduce the championship and give more opportunities to the wrestlers:
“From my standpoint, and obviously I am biased, I would never lie about that, but the depth of our women’s division here in NXT is so unbelievable. What I’m very proud of is we have so many storylines going with a multitude of, not just our women, our men, we have them up and down our show. But our roster is so stacked on the female side, it just seems like the right thing to do. Again, we’ve got a North American Men’s Championship. Ought to have the North American Women’s [Championship] on the other side.”
Micheals continued to put over the women’s division and had no doubts that they would make the new championship one that is very much sought after:
“Again, this is certainly a division that can easily handle it. So look, it was one of those things that you see the writing on the wall. I don’t want to oversimplify it because it’s not the easiest thing in the world, coming up with a two-hour, 52-week-a-year live wrestling show every week. But I know what I like as a fan. I know that the NXT Women’s Division is unbelievably stacked, and they can easily handle a Women’s North American Champion Title. So it was a decision that needed to be made, we made it, and looking forward to crowning that inaugural champion on June 9.”
The new championship design was recently unveiled by Sexyy Red on an episode of NXT.
