Sean Waltman Comments On John Cena’s Potential SummerSlam Return

John Cena

Sean Waltman has given his verdict on the rumours swirling that John Cena is set to make an imminent return to WWE and could very well headline SummerSlam in August.

Rumours have been circulating that Cena and WWE are in talks about the sixteen-time champion of the world returning to the ring this summer. An appearance on WWE’s first live show back on the road in front of a crowd has been mooted. The show in question will be SmackDown set to emanate from Houston, Texas on the 16th of July. That episode of SmackDown will come just two days before this year’s Money In The Bank pay-per-view.

Following on from that story came reports that Cena could be in line to main event SummerSlam for the first time since 2014. In that match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Cena was decimated by Brock Lesnar. Cena’s potential opponent this time around would be none other than WWE Universal Champion ‘The Tribal Chief’ Roman Reigns.

The two men met previously one on one on pay-per-view at No Mercy in 2017. In the intervening four years, the landscape of WWE has changed immeasurably and Reigns’ is character is beyond recognition from that time. Reigns now sits at the ‘head of the table’ in WWE and is flanked by Special Counsel Paul Heyman and his Right Hand Man, Jey Uso.

Giving his take on the potential showdown that would see Cena aim for that record-breaking 17th reign as champion was two-time WWE Hall Of Famer Sean Waltman.

Speaking on Pro Wrestling 4 Life podcast, the former X-Pac was a big fan of the idea, saying:

“Whenever he’s been around, it seems like he’s been trying to help out and help elevate others. He’s such a hard worker. The matches are always really good when he’s in them. Let’s just be honest, whether you’re a John Cena fan or not. I’m a fan of his. I’m a fan of his work ethic, and I’m a fan of his matches.

“I think it would be a great use of him. I just think that would be a very meaningful win.”

Another wrestling icon that sees value in a John Cena return is legendary former manager, Jim Cornette. Cornette believes a Cena return could get more eyes back on wrestling.
