Scrapped Plans For New ROH Championship Revealed

Ring Of Honor, ROH

Bobby Cruise has revealed that an upcoming ROH Championship was scrapped as Ring of Honor went on hiatus.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Bobby Cruise was asked about introducing titles to the Women’s Wrestling Army, and revealed that Ring of Honor scrapped plans for a Women’s Tag Team Championship after the company went away for a few months and was purchased by Tony Khan.

The women’s division was rebuilt during the pandemic by Maria Kanellis and Bobby Cruise. They introduced a Women’s Championship to the company via a tournament that featured new wrestling talent, and stars from other companies too. It featured a mix of well known and upcoming names, with the best-known competitor in the tournament being former TNA star, Angelina Love.

When talking about introducing titles to WWA, Cruise said:

“We figure that’s going to take a while and then we will get into titles. I can already think about doing a women’s champion and women’s tag team champions, which we had talked about with Ring of Honor if we had the time in 2022, we would have done that.”

While talking to Busted Open Radio, Kanellis also revealed that a television slot for Women’s Wrestling Army had been confirmed, with the show airing every Wednesday night at 7 pm ET, on the free-to-air channel ‘Pro Wrestling TV’. The shows are set to run for 1 hour a week and be just like other wrestling companies’ shows featuring interviews, storylines and matches, but will also have an added feature of documentaries being a part of the show too.

Ring of Honor was purchased by Tony Khan, and made official in an announcement to fans on March 2, 2022’s episode of AEW Dynamite. As part of the deal, Khan now owns the rights to all of ROH’s branding, intellectual property, production equipment, and probably most importantly, their extensive video library.

Tony Khan is said to have been having ongoing talks with WarnerMedia and is intending to bring back ROH to a weekly television show similarly to how AEW started with Dynamite.

Khan quickly put his own stamp on ROH with Samoa Joe winning the ROH Television Championship and Wheeler Yuta becoming the ROH Pure Champion amongst a range of title changes within the ROH brand since his acquisition of the company.
