Retired wrestler Armstrong, had been with WWE almost continually since 2006, until being furloughed as part of wide-ranging company cutbacks earlier this year. During that time he appeared in high profile storylines with CM Punk and The Undertaker as well as Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton. Famously being used by The Authority as part of their plan to keep Bryan from winning the WWE Championship.
In recent weeks producers Billy Kidman and Pat Buck have also returned to work, although the likes of Lance Storm, Fit Finley and Shane Helms amongst others have not. Kurt Angle, who was also among those released, has appeared sporadically for the company, most recently on an episode of The Broken Skull Sessions with Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Alongside backstage personnel, numerous wrestlers were also released due to budget cuts relating to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many have since gone on to establish themselves elsewhere. With Deonna Purrazzo winning the TNA Knockouts Championship, while Rusev (Miro), Zack Ryder (Matt Cardona) and Eric Rowan (Brodie Lee) have appeared in AEW.
