Although John Cena is much less of a fixture in WWE than he has been in the past, he has never fully closed the door on an in-ring return. And what bigger way to return that at WrestleMania 39?
This WrestleMania season promises to be bigger than ever with a whole host of legends outside of Cena also linked with matches or appearances. Dwayne Johnson and Steve Austin have been part of the rumour mill for months, while it is expected that Cody Rhodes and Charlotte Flair will be fully back in action for the show.
John Cena’s Movie Schedule Could Block WrestleMania Match
WWE announced on December 9th that John Cena will be appearing on the December 30th edition of Friday Night SmackDown. This will be his first appearance since celebrating the 20th anniversary of his WWE debut back in June on Raw. This led many to wonder whether Cena could be involved in an angle which would help set up involvement at the Royal Rumble on January 28th, or even plant the seeds for WrestleMania.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer agrees with suggestions that the appearance could set up a storyline, while also urging caution. Cena is scheduled to be filming a movie with Zac Efron during February and March. While this wouldn’t make an appearance or match impossible, it does make putting something together that much more difficult.
“Cena will be on the 12/30 Smackdown show in Tampa. If he’s going to do Mania or Rumble, that would in theory be the start of the angle. He won’t be available most of February and March due to movie work.”
There have previously been hints that Cena could be back in action to face Austin Theory. The pair came face-to-face during Cena’s last on-screen appearance back in June However, speculation regarding “one more match” kicked into a new gear in November. Fresh off the back of his impressive display at Crown Jewel, Logan Paul called out Cena for a match at WrestleMania.
