Sasha Banks has been ranked the ninth best wrestler of 2020 in the first-ever ITR 50 as announced in the latest issue of Inside The Ropes Magazine.
2020 would start on somewhat of a downer for Banks as she missed the majority of January and February due to injury, including the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble. She would eventually return to be inserted into the underwhelming five-way elimination match at WrestleMania 36, helping best friend Bayley retain the SmackDown Women’s Championship and appearing alongside the former ‘Hugger’ as they became a focus of WWE TV going into the summer.
In June, things started to swing in favour of ‘The Boss’. Banks & Bayley would pick up the Women’s Tag Team Championships from Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross before Sasha would dethrone RAW Women’s Champion Asuka on the RAW after Extreme Rules. Banks’ curse of being unable to defend a title befell her once again, however, leading to an almost immediate loss of her singles title back to Asuka at SummerSlam before The Golden Role Models lost their tag titles to Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax.
A week later, Bayley turned on her long-time friend with a vicious assault that would put Banks on the shelf for nearly a month.
The resulting rivalry would be one of the best WWE produced all-year culminating with the two facing off inside Hell In A Cell in October. The match was a brutal spectacle and arguably lived up to their NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn bout five years prior, widely regarded as one of the greatest women’s wrestling matches of all-time. Banks would come out on top, ending Bayley’s historic SmackDown Women’s Championship reign and coming out of 2020 with her appetite for revenge sated and one of SmackDown’s top prizes around her waist.
Inside The Ropes Magazine writer Sondra Ruth summarised why Sasha Banks’ affiliation with Bayley throughout the year allowed ‘The Boss’ to thrive as champion:
“A constant highlight of SmackDown this year, delivering both in the ring and as a character. Partnership-turned-rivalry with Bayley helped Banks thrive as both the Women’s Tag Team Champion and SmackDown Women’s Champion.”
