It is official. Sasha Banks will challenge Bayley for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship at WWE Hell in a Cell on October 25 inside the devil’s playground.
Though the bout has not been confirmed as the main event of the show as originally speculated, the clash is years in the making as WWE have expertly told a slow burning tale of jealousy and pent up hatred between the former best friends.
Sasha Banks vs. Bayley inside Hell in a Cell was made official during the first night of the 2020 WWE Draft after Bayley retained her coveted gold against Banks using a steel chair.
Though the rivalry can be traced right back to the pair’s days in NXT through to Bayley becoming the first ever Women’s Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion while leaving Banks behind, it’s in the last year that the pair have shown signs of dissention which leads them to October 25.
The Golden Role Models formed officially in October 2019 after both Sasha Banks and Bayley, who had recently turned heel on Natalya and Becky Lynch respectively, were drafted to Friday Night SmackDown and tension quickly wedged itself between the pair when Bayley was forced to defend her championship against her friend and four other women at WrestleMania 36.
Just when it appeared that Banks would turn on Bayley, ‘The Boss’ helped her to retain the championship and shortly after, the pair captured the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. The victory didn’t help tension in the ranks, making Bayley a double champion.
In order to right this wrong, Sasha Banks challenged Asuka for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship at Extreme Rules but was inadvertently cost the title by her partner after Bayley donned the referee’s shirt and counted the deciding fall.
The decision caused Stephanie McMahon to rule the bout a no-contest, thus stripping Banks of the gold. That changed on the July 27 Raw when Sasha captured the Raw Women’s Championship and everything seemed rosy between the friends.
That was until SummerSlam unravelled their friendship after Bayley’s priorities became clear. Following Sasha Banks sacrificing herself so the SmackDown Women’s Champion could retain her strap, ‘The Role Model’ refused to do the same during Sasha’s rematch with ‘The Empress of Tomorrow’ which cost Banks her title.
The straw that broke the camel’s back came when the duo lost the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships to Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax at WWE Payback and following their rematch, Bayley turned on Banks to the shock of the audience who believed it would be the other way around.
Now, both women will step inside the structure designed to settle rivalries once and for all. While Bayley looks to extend her celebrated reign, Banks seeks to strip her former friend of the thing that means most to her.
Inside the Ropes will have all the coverage of WWE Hell in Cell on October 25.
