Santos Escobar – “I Want To Be The Main Event Of WrestleMania”

By James Holder. Published 13th May 2021.

Former NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar has opened up about his hopes for the future in WWE.

Escobar initially signed with WWE in 2019 after successful stints in AAA, Lucha Underground and a brief stop in IMPACT. After overcoming an injury setback which delayed his debut, the Mexican quickly established himself as one of the stars of the Cruiserweight division.

Escobar won a tournament to crown a new Cruiserweight Champion in the absence of Jordan Devlin, before becoming the undisputed champion at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver.

While the Escobar later lost the title to Kushida, the Lucha Libre star has set his sights on conquering WWE.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, the former AAA Cruiserweight Champion revealed that he wants to go right to the top of the company.

“This business is about confidence. Of course, you need the ability and the skill and the moves, but you need to have confidence. That translates into success. For me, I could be a Cruiserweight Champion forever. I also want to be the next great Mexican wrestler. I want to be the main event of WrestleMania. To achieve that, I’m going to have to work extra hard to get there and go through different moments, like the cruiserweight division. Maybe next is the North American division. After that, maybe the NXT title division then Raw, then SmackDown. I’m never content with my position. I’m always trying to evolve and offer something different. The company sees something in me, and I just need to bring it.”

Following his victory at TakeOver, Santos Escobar was congratulated on social media by WWE Hall of Famer, Sean Waltman. The current NXT Superstar later replied, leading to the pair saying that they should try and share the ring in the future.

Waltman is currently recovering from knee surgery, and is aiming to return to competition in January 2022.

Meanwhile, Santos was back in action on the most recent episode of NXT where he unsuccessfully attempted to regain the Cruiserweight Title in a Two Out Of Three Falls Match against Kushida.
