The rumours surrounding Samoa Joe making a stunning return to NXT have taken a new twist in an update to a previous report.
On April 15th Samoa Joe was released by WWE alongside the likes of Peyton Royce and Mickie James. In the months prior Joe had been performing as an announcer on Monday Night RAW. The former NXT Champion hadn’t competed inside the ring since February 2020.
According to the original report, Joe could be heading back to NXT for the first time since 2017. The report from Fightful Select suggests that numerous talents and staff have heard that some within NXT are looking to bring back the former champion. A return to the black and gold brand would reportedly be for a “wrestling role.”
Despite this, the report also urges caution as nothing has been confirmed by WWE at this time:
“A few things we should specify, talent in a broad sense in speculating this, with some even believing that it’s going to happen. Fightful has reached out to WWE officials but has not confirmed this with them, and have no indication that a deal has been made or will be from our side.”
Since then, however, there has been an update by Fightful Select since this initial report. Now officials within NXT have been reported to have confirmed that Samoa Joe was briefly at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando this week. No word has been given as to why Joe was there but there was confirmation that there have been pitches from within the black and gold brand to use the former NXT Champion.
Samoa Joe signed with WWE back in 2015 after hugely successful stints in TNA/IMPACT and ROH. Joe initially joined NXT, going on to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and the NXT Championship. The star debuted on RAW in early 2017 but failed to hit the heights that many had expected.
The former TNA World Champion won the WWE United States Championship on two occasions, before transitioning into an announcing role after a series of injuries.
