Sammy Guevara Crowned Interim TNT Champion At AEW Battle Of The Belts

Sammy Guevara TNT Champion

Sammy Guevara overcame Dustin Rhodes at AEW Battle Of The Belts to become the first-ever Interim TNT Champion.

Sammy Guevara was originally scheduled to face Cody Rhodes for the TNT Championship at Battle Of The Belts. However, just 24-hours from the opening bell, the match was called off.

On the January 7th episode of Rampage, it was announced that Cody hadn’t been medically cleared to compete, with it later being revealed that he and Brandi were isolating with family who had tested positive for COVID-19.

In place of the title match, Battle Of The Belts saw former champion Sammy Guevara square off against Dustin Rhodes in AEW’s first-ever Interim TNT Championship match.

The match itself was a violent affair, with Rhodes at one point ramming Guevara’s knee into the steel ring steps and dropping him with a piledriver on the floor. Guevara was able to rally and use his ariel offence to take ‘The Natural’ down with a double springboard flip.

Later in the bout, Guevara attempted to put Rhodes through a table at ringside with a Spanish Fly, but Rhodes was able to counter with a Destroyer which sent the two crashing through the furniture. Back in the ring, Rhodes emulated his brother by dropping Guevara with multiple Cross-Rhodes’, but when he tried the Tiger Driver 98, Guevara was able to land a kick on him.

The two then exchanged cradles with Guevara coming out on top for the pinfall victory, capturing the interim gold.

Following the bout, David Crockett presented Sammy Guevara with the Interim TNT Championship belt. His celebrations wouldn’t last long, though, as Daniel Garcia made his way to the ring and confronted Guevara, leading to a brawl between the two. Following a commercial, Guevara challenged Garcia to a match for the title on Dynamite.

Elsewhere on Battle of the Belts, Britt Baker, DMD successfully defended her AEW Women’s Championship against Riho, while Ricky Starks retained the FTW Championship against a challenge from Matt Sydal.
