Sammy Guevara Details Original Plans For AEW Stadium Stampede

Sammy Guevara will never forget the first-ever AEW Stadium Stampede.

Taking place at a time when wrestling promotions had to get creative with their matches due to restrictions in place from the pandemic, Double or Nothing 2020 presented the multi-man battle that included horses, golf carts and a mascot being knocked out.

Many praised the creativity of the promotion as a whole for putting on such a unique concept while giving extra recognition to The Spanish God, who was beaten up more than most throughout the evening. According to the former TNT Champion, it was his idea to be the punchline throughout the match.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Guevara admitted that there were plans for others to be a part of the more memorable spots but thought that the better idea would be for him to be constantly beaten up:

“That was such a crazy time for wrestling, the pandemic and everything. And then it’s like, Okay, we’re gonna wrestle in this big empty stadium, and then we’re all talking about ideas and stuff. And then it almost became a bit of, how much bad stuff can happen to me in the match? I mean, I’m chased by a golf cart. I’m getting chased by a horse. I’m getting hit by sprinklers. I get thrown off of this thing through this platform by Kenny.

I remember the day there was one idea for the horse to chase Hagar, and I knew the golf cart was chasing me later. And I was like, Nah, guys, I think this should be the bit, just bad thing after bad thing. Like, I don’t ever catch a break.”

The match ended when Kenny Omega delivered a One Winged Angel onto Guevara off a raised platform, finally putting the AEW star out of his misery. Continuing to recall the match, Guevara stated that although it was a lengthy process, it was all worth it:

“It was probably one of the most fun matches, even though it took forever to film. And then, as we’re filming it too, we find out it’s probably going to be the last match of Double or Nothing, so it’s like the main event. So that was like really cool, too. And then, you know, I was mad I wasn’t a part of this year’s, I got to be a part of the first two and missed the third one, but it looked good.”

During the same interview, Sammy Guevara detailed how he suffered a concussion at AEW WrestleDream.

Sammy Guevara Returns From Injury

Guevara made his return to AEW TV on the December 27th broadcast of Dynamite to confront the Don Callis Family. The Spanish God was previously out of action after suffering a concussion at the WrestleDream pay-per-view on October 1st. Sammy Guevara did previously note that he had been cleared weeks prior but remained off TV as his wife Tay Melo recently gave birth to their first child.
