Sami Zayn Explains Why Unlikely WWE Match Is One Of His Favourites

Sami Zayn has maintained his 9-year-long streak.

Last week, on the August 4th episode of Raw, former Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn found himself caught in the middle of a brawl between Sheamus and Rusev. Soon, it led to a match between Zayn and Rusev tonight on the August 11th edition of Raw.

In the second hour of the show tonight, Sami Zayn clashed against Rusev for a future World title shot opportunity. While Zayn participated in the battle with a long-term vision, Rusev found himself in the match with an opportunity to avenge his past trauma.

Rusev and Zayn had clashed against each other multiple times in singles matches; however, the Bulgarian Brute never scored a victory over Zayn in televised action during their singles matches.

While Zayn and Rusev’s last match against each other dates back to 13th February, 2017, Zayn’s victory, which started his singles streak over Rusev, took place on 7th November, 2016.

However, despite a close fight, Rusev failed to score the victory after Solo Sikoa’s MFT attacked Zayn and handed him the victory via disqualification, helping him maintain his nine-year-old streak.

Following the conclusion of the match, fans in Quebec City again witnessed a brawl break out between Sheamus and Rusev, like last week.

Karrion Kross Recently Called Out Sami Zayn’s Lack Of Main Roster Success

Days before his SummerSlam 2025 match against Sami Zayn, Karrion Kross had decided to call out Zayn’s lack of main-roster success.

“That’s right, he’s got to say that Kross told the truth, which everybody already knows anyway. I wouldn’t agree with you that his rise was organic, I mean, he was piggybacking off Roman Reigns to get to where he’s been and ever since he hasn’t been able to piggyback off Roman Reigns, he hasn’t found the same success he did. Let’s just tell the truth here, you’re being nice. You’re trying to be unbiased. Let’s tell the truth, he’s a manipulator and a liar.”
