Rob Van Dam has revealed that he believes top AEW star MJF was the top heel in 2021, saying that he is “super committed” to the role.
WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam has given his verdict on which heel had the best 2021, naming AEW’s MJF as the top villain in wrestling.
In 2021, Maxwell Jacob Friedman solidified himself as a top star in the company when, after being kicked out of the Inner Circle for conspiring against Chris Jericho, he revealed he had formed his own faction in The Pinnacle. The group, consisting of MJF, Wardlow, FTR, and Shawn Spears, entered a brutal feud with MJF’s old faction which culminated in a victory over the group in a Blood and Guts match.
While the star was later defeated by Jericho in a match where the ‘Demo God’s career was on the line, he went back to his winning ways in feuds against Brian Pillman Jr. and then Darby Allin, who he claimed a victory over at Full Gear.
Giving his reasons for choosing the Dynamite Diamond Ring winner as the top heel to Sportskeeda Wrestling, RVD noted that he is “super committed” and told a story of a moment outside of the AEW ring that showed the star was a heel at all times.
“I think MJF really has the fans’ attention. He’s super committed from what I understand, he was at a comic convention of some kind and on his own without the production crew behind him or anything, he walked into a room full of black people but they had a black person on stage and he said, ‘Does anybody have any questions on Black Lives Matter?’ Like, what a heel. He’s just committed, he doesn’t laugh at himself or break character that I know.”
MJF has already had a huge start to 2021, handing CM Punk his first loss in AEW during the February 2nd episode of Dynamite which, to add insult to injury, was held in Punk’s hometown of Chicago.
