The Royal Rumble is one of the most exciting wrestling events of the year mainly because of its surprise factor. The eponymous Rumble matches give some former WWE superstars the opportunity to come back for a night and relive the things that made them want to become wrestlers in the first place.
And while some of these surprise returns only last for a single night, some, like MVP and Edge, have returned on a (semi-) regular basis after appearing at the Royal Rumble. And now another wrestler from a bygone era is considering following in their footsteps.
Chris Masters considering a return to WWE
Masters had two runs in WWE, one from 2003-2007 and another from 2009-2011. Although he got some strong pushes here and there and got to face his idol Shawn Michaels in the ring, he never won any titles there.
He has since moved on to wrestling on the independent circuit and has also wrestled for the National Wrestling Alliance, where he is a 2-time NWA National Champion.
But something appears to be pulling him back towards WWE, even though both of his runs ended with disappointment. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Masters explained why, all of a sudden, he might seriously consider returning.
“I’ve never even thought about going back to WWE, honestly, because, and it’s not out of anything bitter. I had a couple of runs there and it ended the way it did. And I just realized that my love is for professional wrestling even if it’s not with WWE.
But with everything that I’ve learned in the last couple of years and then also seen Shelton, Carlito, MVP all my buddies, I finally started looking at it and it was more out of this what you just mentioned.
It was more not out of Chris Masters coming back, it was more out of because I remember getting in touch with that young wrestling fan. I remember what is it that we’re always looking for? We’re looking for that “oh sh*t moment” I mean, like that Ultimate Warrior comeback at WrestleMania 8.
It’s not to say anything I could do can measure to that, but the Bobby Lashley scenario is fascinating because I haven’t been there for so long though.”
